For Serge Lesage, the requirement of quality is vital. His creations therefore call on craftsman fabrication methods, as well as the performance of the original tools and the ancestral know-how of the regions where it has always been the trade.

The craftsmen use a procedure which is performed on cotton canvas, on which the motif will have been drawn beforehand. It consists of implanting tufts of colour on the canvas following the line of the carpet. The wool is then fixed by a layer of latex. The finishing touches (surface levelling, backing, edge binding and edge selvedge fixing) can then be made.

This ancient technique has hardly changed over the centuries and is performed using vertical looms.
The wool hair is knotted onto the warp strings using running knots which are then cut.

The same manufacturing procedure is used as for the carpets tufted by hand, the only difference being that the wool is tufted beforehand at the highest possible relief and then "sculptured" by hand and using scissors. This renders the sculptor's work infinitely precisous, as if he makes a mistake the carpet cannot be sold.
The weaving, identical to that of a tapestry, is performed using
horizontal looms.
The pattern, painted on paper or canvas, is placed under the warp strings so that the drop-wire man may follow the patern which shows through under the strings.
